Escherichia Coli: Simply called, E. Coli. Among others, this disease can cause diarrhea, Nausea and vomiting, abdominal cramping, pain or abdominal tenderness. The most common way of acquiring this disease is by eating contaminated foods such as fresh beef or unpasteurized milk. Often, healthy people get infected when they contact an infected person or when they are touched by an infected person.
Strep Throat: Caused by streptococcal bacteria, strep throat is an airborne disease. It is transmitted when an infected person sneezes and coughs into other peoples’ space. The disease can also be picked up through shared utensils or materials. Strep throat is painful, it causes discomfort with swallowing. the disease is also contagious. Strep throat should be suspected if you have fever, headache, pain with swallowing accompanied by red swollen tonsils. Strep throat can lead to scarlet fever, rheumatic fever or kidney inflammation.
Salmonellosis: Salmonella bacteria is found in the small intestine. It is usually shed through feces or stool. People get sick when they drink fecal contaminated water or eat stool contaminated food. Usually, acquiring this disease is consequent upon disregard for routine hand washing after using the bathroom. Symptoms of salmonellosis include fever, nausea, vomiting and severe diarrhea necessitating medical attention.
Pink Eye: Pink eye which is also known as conjunctivitis, is an inflammation of the white part of the eye. People get infected with conjunctivitis usually from contaminated hand-to-eye touch. Viral or bacterial, both forms of conjunctivitis are contagious. Initial causes of pink eye include dirt/dirty lenses, allergies, foreign objects in the eye, virus or bacteria. Mode of transmission is by contact with someone who is infected. Conjunctivitis is painful. Often, it gives a false sense of having ‘something’ stuck in the affected eye. Pink eye can cause blurry vision and teary eye and makes the eye somehow appear sensitive to light.
